Doom metal reviews

Doom metal reviews by Stefan Nordström from Swedish death/doom metal band Soliloquium. Doom metal is one of my favorite genres, so I hope my reviews can help you find some new cool bands.

I try to focus my reviewing on underground bands. Most of my doom metal reviews are also published on rateyourmusic.com and Metal Archives. Please contact me if you want me to review your doom metal band.

There are also plenty of articles on doom metal on this page, don’t miss the full doom metal genre guide, the 10 essential death/doom metal bands or the overall deathdoom.com blog feed. I try to update with new doom metal content as often as possible, so the blog feed is a safe bet to find most of it.

Treurwilg - Departure review

Treurwilg – Departure review

Many bands are playing death/doom metal these days, and it’s spreading far beyond the standard geography of Sweden, Finland and England. It’s nice to hear a Dutch band beyond Officium Triste trying the genre out. “Departure” is Treurwilg’s debut, and it sounds very professional for an independent band. The production Read more…

Hamferð – Evst review

Hamferð’s debut EP is one of the biggest surprises of the last few years. Quite an original doom/death metal band that really differs from the typical genre “schools” formed by Katatonia, Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride.. from the Faroe Islands?! This review is also posted at rateyourmusic.com. This is Read more…

From Autumn – Absence review

From Autumn play highly melodic death/doom metal with a classic doom edge. The songs are slow dirges, and uptempo moments are rare. There’s a depressingly anthemic feeling in this release that sticks with me. I’m unsure what the scene looks like there, but I was a bit surprised to learn Read more…

Mourning Beloveth - Rust and Bone review

Mourning Beloveth – Rust & Bone review

Mourning Beloveth is a death/doom act with a long and impressive discography. The band’s success formula revolves around writing long epics based on morphing riff repetitions and mournful melodies. This is topped off with some of the best death metal growls the genre has to offer, as well as some Read more…

The Foreshadowing – Seven Heads Ten Horns review

The Foreshadowing is an Italian gothic doom metal with three strong albums in their previous discography. The sound revolves around slow, apocalyptic landscapes that provide an ultimate support for Marco Benevento’s baritone vocals. This review is also posted at rateyourmusic.com and Metal Archives. This album pretty much picks up where Read more…

Junius – Eternal Rituals for the Accretion of Light review

The previous Junius album “Reports From the Threshold of Death” hit me like a bomb a few years ago, and completely dominated my playlist for a long time. The blend of post metal ambience, strong hooks, Katatonia nods and Chino Moreno style vocals was obsessive and addictive. Every song was Read more…

Kaunis Kuolematon – Kylmä kaunis maailma review

While the level of innovation in the death/doom genre the past few years can definitely be questioned, there has still been a steady stream of quality bands surfacing. Finnish band Kaunis Kuolematon is one of them. Immediate comparisons to Swallow the Sun’s debut “The Morning Never Came” can be made Read more…

Marianas Rest – Horror Vacui review

Finding and supporting the unknown bands in the death/doom metal spectrum has become a mission of mine. Marianas Rest is a Finnish band that fittingly couldn’t sound more Finnish. “Horror Vacui” is the band’s full-length debut. The melancholic melodies draw heavily from fellow Finns Insomnium and Mors Principium Est. This Read more…

The Wounded – Atlantic review

The Wounded is an underappreciated gothic metal act from the Netherlands. I’d describe their sound something like this; The Cure’s Disintegration with a metal backdrop and more overt sorrow. It’s a glorious concept that works in practice as well. I got into them through 2016’s “Sunset”, but this album is Read more…

The Wounded – Sunset review

Sometimes long-running acts just pop out with a great album like they’ve been hidden under a rock. Dutch gothic metal band The Wounded is one of those, playing for nearly 20 years without finding its way into my playlist. It’s weird how the band has been unknown for so long, Read more…
