Doom metal reviews

Doom metal reviews by Stefan Nordström from Swedish death/doom metal band Soliloquium. Doom metal is one of my favorite genres, so I hope my reviews can help you find some new cool bands.

I try to focus my reviewing on underground bands. Most of my doom metal reviews are also published on rateyourmusic.com and Metal Archives. Please contact me if you want me to review your doom metal band.

There are also plenty of articles on doom metal on this page, don’t miss the full doom metal genre guide, the 10 essential death/doom metal bands or the overall deathdoom.com blog feed. I try to update with new doom metal content as often as possible, so the blog feed is a safe bet to find most of it.

Swallow the Sun – New Moon review

This my Swallow the Sun – New Moon review. My Swallow the Sun playlist mainly consists of debut “The Morning Never Came, and a few selected hits from the other albums. I recently wrote a review of “Ghosts of Loss”, and now I decided to revisit “New Moon” in hope Read more…

Swallow the Sun – Ghosts of Loss review

“Ghosts of Loss” is the second album from Finnish melodic death/doom metal act Swallow the Sun. This review is a part of a relistening binge. I always enjoyed opener “The Giant”, with it’s massive scope and instantly recognizable opening melody. “Descending Winters” and “Psychopath’s Lair” are both typical heavy Swallow Read more…

Chelsea Wolfe - Hiss Spun review

Chelsea Wolfe – Hiss Spun review

Chelsea Wolfe is an artist with a constantly evolving sound, and she reinvents herself once again on “Hiss Spun”. Despite having some doom metal tendencies, the last album “Abyss” was largely based on electronics. On here, her creepy vocal acrobatics are often backed up by doom metal guitars. This review Read more…

Paradise Lost – Medusa review

2015’s “The Plague Within” was a pretty surprising Paradise Lost records, since it brought back some growls and extreme metal tendencies, and most of “Medusa” continues down that route. Their evolution since returning to a metal-based sound in 2007 has been interesting, and after doing it in a polished way Read more…

Katatonia – The Fall of Hearts review (and 2017 revisit)

This article is a combination of my original “The Fall of Hearts” review, also available at rateyourmusic.com and Metal Archives, and my follow-up track by track analysis. Original Katatonia – “The Fall of Hearts” review I was perplexed the first time I heard this album. Katatonia has been favorite band Read more…

Cold Insight – Further Nowhere review

Another solid Slumber-related project Slumber’s 2004 death/doom metal masterpiece “Fallout” created quite a trail of bands, not only through its influence on other musicians. Most of the band members went on to form more or less similar sounding projects. It also seems that some of their collaborators started making music Read more…

Lying Figures – The Abstract Escape review

Lying Figures is a French death/doom metal band signed to Naturmacht Productions. “The Abstract Escape” is the awaited full length debut, featuring eight fresh songs of pure melancholy. The style is similar to their previous material: strikingly sorrowful death/doom highly influenced by Katatonia’s “Brave Murder Day” and “Sounds of Decay” Read more…

Self-hatred – Theia review

I came across this band while checking out the many death/doom metal releases from 2016. Self-Hatred is a Czech band with a strong focus on atmosphere. The competition in the death/doom field seems to get tougher by the day, with new acts popping up everywhere. It’s becoming a game where Read more…

Novembers Doom – Hamartia review

I haven’t enjoyed the last few albums from Novembers Doom, making their growing fanbase has been a bit of a mystery for me. There are certainly a lot of better options in the death/doom and melodic death metal genres. Despite high end production, and that Paul Kuhr is one hell Read more…

Kaunis Kuolematon – Vapaus review

Kaunis Kuolematon hit my playlist like a bomb a few years ago with the debut “Kylmä kaunis maailma“. The Kaunis brand of death/doom metal combines familiar melodic Finnish aesthetics with a more urgent sense of angst. They don’t hold back on the raw emotion. “Kylmä kaunis maailma” was not as Read more…
