Doom metal reviews

Doom metal reviews by Stefan Nordström from Swedish death/doom metal band Soliloquium. Doom metal is one of my favorite genres, so I hope my reviews can help you find some new cool bands.

I try to focus my reviewing on underground bands. Most of my doom metal reviews are also published on rateyourmusic.com and Metal Archives. Please contact me if you want me to review your doom metal band.

There are also plenty of articles on doom metal on this page, don’t miss the full doom metal genre guide, the 10 essential death/doom metal bands or the overall deathdoom.com blog feed. I try to update with new doom metal content as often as possible, so the blog feed is a safe bet to find most of it.

Doomed – 6 Anti-Odes to Life review

Death/doom metal is one my favorite genres. It’s also the one I play with one of my bands. I’ll be frank though: it isn’t one of the most original and innovative metal genres. There are many quality bands, but most of them follow the genre blueprints and expecations, at least Read more

Deathwhite – For a Black Tomorrow review

After Katatonia’s recent hiatus, there is certainly a hole to fill in the depressive metal with clean vocals style. Deathwhite seems to aiming to do this. They’re an American gothic/doom metal band formed in 2012. Deathwhite previously released two EP’s: “Ethereal” and “Solitary Martyr”. The band mixes gothic rock with Read more

Ocean of Grief – Nightfall’s Lament review

2018 has been a lacklustre music year for me so far. Ocean of Grief’s full-length debut is one of the few bright spots. The band is a Greek death/doom metal act that received some well-deserved buzz for their 2016 EP “Fortress of My Dark Self”. This resulted in getting signed Read more

Thence – We are Left With a Song review

Finland is an export leader in dark metal and rock music. Thence is yet another quality band that proves it. The music style is somewhere in the borderline of metal and rock where other Finnish bands like Hanging Garden and Throes of Dawn also operate. Merging styles in this way Read more

Hanging Garden – I Am Become review

Hanging Garden’s 2015 album “Blackout Whiteout” quickly became my favorite from the band. This disc, “I Am Become”, continues down the same road as that one and the follow-up EP “Hereafter”. Expect a mix between Finnish death/doom darkness and contemporary influences. The closest comparison is probably Ghost Brigade. “I Am Read more

Junius – The Martyrdom of a Catastrophist review

2011’s “Reports From the Threshold of Death” is my favorite Junius album by far, as well as on one of my all-time favorites. This earlier state of band still has a lot to offer though. On this album, “The Martyrdom of a Catastrophist”, they focus more on post rock atmosphere Read more

Grimegod – Wrong Roads review

I only found out about Romania’s Grimegod after missing out on them on the Rockstadt Extreme Fest 2017 festival. I’m a bit disappointed about it, since “Wrong Roads” is a solid slice of death/doom metal. I often prefer my death/doom more angsty and aggressive. Raw, down to earth themes tend Read more
