Finnish death/doom metal

Finland is a breeding ground for death doom metal, especially the type with a strong melodic death metal influence. Amorphis first two albums are highly influential death/doom metal classics. “The Karelian Isthmus” has strong old school death metal roots while “Black Winter Day” adds folk and progressive metal influences into the mix. A newer finnish band in the style is Rapture, a band highly reminiscent of Katatonia’s “Brave Murder Day”. The band released three albums before going inactive, and all three are examples of quality doom metal.

Newer death/doom metal from Finland

Kaunis Kuolematon and Hanging Garden are two examples of good bands who continue the tradition of Finnish death/doom metal. Kaunius Kuolematon is quite similar to doom giants Swallow the Sun, while having a more aggressive edge to their sound and Finnish lyrics. Hanging Garden play death/doom with a gothic edge and more clean vocals. The scene seems to be alive and well, more so than anywhere else.
