2017 has been up-and-down year for music, featuring both surprises (Ulver!) and disappointments (Meshuggah, Suffocation, Testament). I feel pretty safe putting together this list of 5 great albums from the first half of 2017 since I don’t see a lot of interesting stuff coming out during the summer months.
Immolation – Atonement
Junius – Eternal Rituals for the Accretion of Light
“Reports from the Thresholds of Death” is one of my favorite albums ever, so I had high expectations. “Eternal Rituals..” is a less catchy, more sludgy and out there album that’s great in its own right.
Kaunis Kuolematon – Vapaus
A list of this kind on a site called deathdoom.com would be unfitting without a death/doom metal album, so I’m glad Kaunis Kuolematon released a new one in 2017. “Vapaus” is a strong addition to their discography, and another reason I strongly urge people to check this band out.
Petter Carlsen – Glimt
Petter Carlsen is an underestimated Norwegian songwriter that keeps delivering high quality songs. “Glimt” is his fourth album, and his first to feature lyrics in Norwegian. Another strong addition to the Petter Carlsen discography. Check his music out, now!
Ulver – The Assassination of Julius Ceasar
Ulver has made some pretty cool music over the years, but this new one is something special. The mix of sensual Depeche Mode hooks, darkwave and techno tendencies, and typical wild Ulver experimentation makes one hell of an album. I was a bit surprised to hear them put out something this good, kind of out of nowhere.
A few albums that almost made it:
- Hour of Penance – Cast the First Stone
- Obituary – Obituary
- Pain of Salvation – In the Passing Light of Day
- Slowdive – Slowdive
- Violet Cold – Anomie
