Eudaimony - Futile - black doom metal perfection

I keep rediscovering Eudaimony’s excellent 2013 “Futile” album over and over again, always surprised at how little attention at gets. So here’s why it’s so awesome, and why you should listen to it if you like doom-ish metal music.

About Eudaimony

Eudaimony is a German/Swedish project that got started in 2007, released an album in 2013 and faded into obscurity. “Unknown” status at Metal Archives doesn’t bode well for more material, but who knows? Anyway, the sole album is more than enough reason to dive into the project.

The perfect take on black/doom?

I’m huge on death/doom (deathdoom.com, duh, obviously!) but to me, black/doom is rarely done right. It easily turns into DSBM, which isn’t particularly my cup of tea except in rare occasions. I just generally don’t like gimmicks, and I’m very much a Katatonia “sad, but hoping to improve things” kind of listener more than into purposeful self-destruction.

Eudaimony obviously takes some hints from early Katatonia here, and guitar-wise it’s not far from 90’s death/doom in many cases. The guitar tone is more black metal, however, and the vocals are a distinct black-ish rasp. What really gets me here in the atmosphere and the super-bleak melodies. It’s sonically beautiful and the songs and sections are precisely written.

Killer guest performances

“December’s Hearse” is the clear standout song for me on the album, but having Mick Moss (Antimatter) on the song “Portraits” and plenty of added violin may be the album’s spark of genius. The guitar lines are effective, but sometimes rather naked, so the added instruments have plenty of space to make a solid impact.

The songs are my kind of length, and the whole thing clocks in at a reasonable 44 minutes. I’d go as far as saying this is my favorite black/doom album, along with the Forgotten Tomb debut (if that one counts?). Empyrium’s Markus Stock mixed and mastered the whole thing, and it sounds massive, which makes the lack of attention even more surprising.

Anyway, I hope I raved enough about Eudaimony and “Futile” to convince you to have a listen. Every time I dig up this gem I’m surprised it isn’t well-known, even if it was a sole release from 2013. Hit it up!
