Are you looking for the best Romanian metal bands? This my list of 10 cool ones to check out! I’ve attended Rockstadt and Metal Gates multiple times, and I have to say that the Romanian metal scene has a lot offer. Many quality bands that unfortunately aren’t known outside the country, but this is my attempt to change that.

Most famous Romanian metal bands
Let’s get through some of the mega bands first. As usual with these lists, I try to avoid the obvious and well-known bands. No-one needs to know the Metallica of Romania, right?
- Bucovina
- Dordeduh
- Negură Bunget
10 great Romanian metal bands you should know
Cadavrul
Do you like your death metal old school? Then Cadavrul is the band for you! Swedish-style Entombed/Dismember with everything you’d expect. Every country needs to have a band or two like that, right?
Listen: “Marş Funebru”
Clouds
Clouds is a classic Romanian doom metal band leaning towards funeral doom. Probably the first Romanian metal bands I discovered, with a long discography full with interesting features and well-written material.
Listen: “How Can I Be There”
DinUmbră
This genre-bridging band has been around since 1998. 2024’s “Finality” (the latest album as of writing this) is a solid gothic/doom-sounding album that’s definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of the genre.
Listen: “Dying World”
Grimegod
Long-running death/doom metal that is strangely underrated and unknown outside Romania. I really enjoy their 2014 album “Wrong Roads”. From what I see, the band has remained active since then without releasing more material. Hopefully there will be another album some day.
Listen: “Conscience Song”
Machiavellian God
Machiavellian God is a melodic death metal band with progressive song structures that has slowly been gaining traction over the last few years. Really underrated band, and also very good live. I expect more people to get into them over time, because it’s truly well-written stuff.
Listen: “Eternal Echoes”
Sur Austru
Romania has no shortage of atmospheric black metal, and Sur Austru is another quality one. Definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of Negura Bunget and Dordeduh looking for more similar stuff.
Listen: “Cele Rele”
The Wise Become Fools
I stumbled upon this post metal band on the Metal Gates Festival in Bucharest, and it’s really cool stuff. Expect a sludge/post type sound somewhere around Cult of Luna, with its own aggressive twist. Great potential in this band and I’m looking forward to hearing more material.
Listen: “Noble, a Lie Nevertheless”
Umbersun
No deathdoom.com blog article without death/doom, right? At the time of writing this, Umbersun has one sole album out: 2024’s “Endless Winter Nights”, and it’s a good tone. Think slightly symphonic and black-metal leaning death/doom.
Listen: “Denied”
Váthos
The sole Váthos album “Underwater” is a quality offering of post-black metal with a depressive edge. Upon hearing this, I’m surprised the band isn’t more well-known. Definitely worth checking out for fans of post/atmospheric black metal.
Listen: “The Suicide”
Zgripsorum
No melodic death metal bands on the list, so let’s fix that with Zgripsorum. Strong early 2000’s melodeath vibe here, reminding of stuff like Callenish Circle and so on that I used to be into back in the day.
Listen: “Smash the Crowns”
